How to Prepare for Your Engagement Photo Session in Yorkshire or Derbyshire
Planning an engagement photo session in Yorkshire or Derbyshire? Whether you're celebrating your engagement or using the shoot as a practice run before your big day, here are some expert tips to help you get the most out of your session — and to ensure you feel confident, relaxed, and totally in love on camera.
1. Think of Your Engagement Shoot as a Wedding Day Trial Run
Your engagement photo session is the perfect warm-up for your wedding photography. It gives you and your partner a chance to get used to the camera, understand how I work, and learn how to feel comfortable being photographed together.
Not keen on having your photo taken? You're not alone — many couples feel the same at first! But don’t worry. With my relaxed, chatty approach (and a few laughs thrown in), you’ll soon forget the camera’s even there. I promise that by the end of the shoot, you’ll both be saying, “Can we do that again?!”
2. Wear Something Comfortable & Coordinated
When choosing what to wear, go for smart casual outfits that complement each other without matching exactly. Think earthy tones, layers, and textures that blend with the beautiful Yorkshire and Derbyshire countryside.
We’ll be walking, cuddling — and yes, you might even be climbing! I’ve been known to guide couples up scenic rock formations or through forest trails for that perfect romantic shot. So comfort is key!
3. Choose a Location That Means Something to You
Location is everything in photography — and Yorkshire and Derbyshire are full of breathtaking backdrops for engagement sessions. From the dramatic peaks of the Peak District to the charming streets of Sheffield, there are so many beautiful spots to choose from.
Consider picking a location that’s personal to you:
Where you got engaged
The place you had your first date
A favourite walking spot or village you love
Stuck for ideas? I’m always happy to suggest some of my favourite hidden gems around South Yorkshire and Derbyshire.
4. Pick the Right Time of Day
Light matters! The best photos often happen during the golden hour — shortly after sunrise or before sunset — when the natural light is soft and flattering.
Also, think about when you feel your best. Are you a morning person, or do you come alive in the late afternoon? If you're tired, hungry (or hangry!), it can show in the photos. So, make sure you're well-rested, fed, and hydrated before the session.
5. Be Yourselves & Have Fun!
This session is about you two — your story, your love, and your quirks. Whether you’re goofy, romantic, shy, or outgoing, bring all of that to your shoot.
An engagement shoot is more than just a chance to get nice photos; it’s a celebration of this special chapter in your journey together. Laugh, hug, kiss, dance, climb, run — whatever feels right for you.
Let’s make some epic engagement photos together that truly reflect who you are!
