Our Love Story: From a Puppy Walk to 'A Thousand Times Yes'

What’s Your Love Story? How Did You Meet?

Our story began in an unexpected yet beautifully simple way—online, during COVID. With restrictions easing, we finally met for a walk in Endcliffe Park, venturing out to Forge Dam. It was a sunny day, perfect for our first in-person conversation. The twist? I brought along my 3-month-old puppy, Sam, who was in full shark mode due to teething. Ruth, on the other hand, neglected to tell me she was scared of dogs! What followed was a hilarious adventure, including getting scolded by two old ladies for ‘over-walking’ Sam. Once they moved along, we enjoyed a lovely chat and a much-needed ice cream at the Dam—yum!

How Did You Get Engaged?

After months of ‘gentle’ persuasion from Ruth, I finally pulled off a surprise proposal. The original plan had to change because Ruth made brunch plans on the big day! After brunch, we took a walk in Ecclesall Woods with Sam. I had packed food (a sneaky excuse to carry the ring), and when we stopped by a stream for a snack, I handed Ruth a sealed envelope. Inside was a letter from Sam, complete with a transfer of his paw print. In true Ruth fashion, she was too busy pretending to be a pirate with a Jammy Dodger eye patch to realize what was happening. When she finally read, “Dad has a question for you,” she burst into tears. Meanwhile, I accidentally broke the ring box but played it cool. Through the happy tears, she said, “A thousand times yes!” and then we rushed to tell her parents, who had been eagerly waiting since I’d asked her dad weeks before.

Why Did You Choose Your Venue?

We always loved the idea of a barn-style venue but didn’t want to stray too far from Sheffield. Hazel Gap was only the second place we visited, and as soon as we walked through the doors, we knew it was the one. It’s a stunning location, surrounded by beautiful scenery, and it ticked all our boxes. Even Sam approved when we brought him along for a viewing!

What’s the Style/Theme/Vibe of Your Wedding?

Autumnal and cozy, perfectly complementing the barn setting and our October date.

Is There Anything Special at Your Wedding and Why?

Instead of confetti, we’re having bubbles—because Ruth absolutely loves them! We also booked an incredible band that we fell in love with as a gift to ourselves.

What Are You Most Looking Forward to About Your Wedding Day?

Cake, sweets, and s’mores—basically anything edible! Oh, and of course, the small matter of getting married. We’re also excited to see family and friends we don’t get to see often enough.

Any Future Advice for Brides/Grooms Planning Their Day?

Give yourself more time than we did and just enjoy the process. It may be stressful, but it’s all worth it in the end.

Kind Words and Why We Chose Our Photographer

From the beginning, Ruth insisted that Sharon was had perfect person for the job—a talented friend who she used to work with. It was an easy choice, and it’s extra special to have a friend capturing our big day!
